BMI Self-Care Plan:
7 Steps to Reduce Your Risk

Risk Categories based on BMI readings
Obese = 30 or higher
Overweight = 25 to 29.9
Normal Weight = 18.5 to 24.9
Underweight = < 18.5

Our Goal: Simply to provide the guidelines needed to improve your risk category. In the end, the target is to move from a higher risk category into a lower risk category for BMI.

1. Self-Care Goals and Monitoring

If you are currently on any medication, be sure to continue until you reduce your risk category and your doctor gives the okay to reduce or eliminate the medication

2. Know Your Numbers

Your BMI is usually tested at standard office visits. It is easy to assess as it is based on an individual’s height and weight.

3. Get Active

To lower your risk category, build in 30 to 45 minutes of moderate-intensity activity (such as a brisk walk) on as many days of the week as you can manage.

4. Manage Weight

Controlling your weight can help reduce many health risks including but not limited to heart disease, diabetes and cancers.

5. Follow the Basic Rules of the Mediterranean Diet

  • Eat fruit every day, vegetables with every meal.
  • Avoid highly, processed and high sugar food products.
  • Add foods that are higher in omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Control alcohol consumption.
  • Eat in control being aware of portions consumed.

6. Are you a smoker?

Stop.

7. Manage Stress
